Norwich await injury verdicts on Sargent & McLean

Norwich City hope injuries to striker Josh Sargent and captain Kenny McLean are not serious after both had to go off in their 1-1 draw with Sheffield United.

Top scorer Sargent was replaced just before half-time at Bramall Lane and Scotland international McLean did not reappear after the interval.

The Canaries had a great chance to win the game but Amankwah Forson failed to find the net in a one-on-one with the United keeper and they remain next to bottom of the Championship, five points from safety.

“Sarge got a knock, we need to assess how it is with him. With Kenny, his hip locked in the first half, you saw it with the way he was running, it was not his normal style,” head coach Philippe Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk.

“We took him off at half-time to prevent that he got a bigger injury and we will see over the next few days if they will be ready for Saturday.

“Of course, I hope that (they will), otherwise it’s an opportunity for other players to get the opportunity and fight for the team to get the points.

“That’s a positive and negative but I am now three weeks here and I think everybody played already from the squad.”

Norwich were without summer signing Mathias Kvistgaarden against the Blades and Clement said he would be seeing a specialist about a knee injury first suffered against Coventry City in September.

“He had rehab, he started training and playing again, he felt good, but this week he felt his knee again in the same place so we need to make an assessment with the knee specialist so we know what’s the best action to take,” said Clement.

Norwich have only won one of the Belgian’s five games in charge since his appointment to replace the sacked Liam Manning as head coach.

But he said “clear principles” had been established and “the belief is there” now among the squad.

“Everyone is on the same page. There are clear instructions about what he wants everyone to do and everyone’s on board with it,” said full-back Kellen Fisher.

“We’ve only been together two, three weeks and everyone can see from our performances and the way we’re trying to play, there is a clear structure. It’s a good way and hopefully moving forwards we can get the points (we need).”

Fisher admitted there had been times earlier in the season when Norwich had tended to “hide” after falling behind but that was no longer the case.

“We are up for the task, we kept going forwards (against United), played some great football at times and had a lot of chances, especially at the end and we were unlucky not to get the three points,” he said.

Norwich have four more games before the end of the month, starting with a home fixture against Southampton on Saturday.
